Air Mail

Italy in Transition, Page 48 (GR-1)

These stamps are also the same as the previous issues for their purposes (i.e., air mail and express mail), but with G.N.R. overprinted on them – Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana, meaning National Republican Guard.

I’m surprised they didn’t make a new design for the espress mail stamps, a design without the picture of the King on it since he turned against them, surrendering in September 1943. All of these stamps were printed in May 1944, eight months afterwards. Germany would surrender in Italy at the start of May 1945, a week before all German forces surrendered.

Note

This page still looks sparse. It’s slow going to complete it; it hasn’t been a priority, though. They’re not easy to find and when I do, they’re expensive. I’ve seen the air mail stamps on the third row for sale on-line, but the cost would have blown my budget for just two stamps. I’ve been putting my resources elsewhere – primarily in Italian Colonies.

  • Amt. is an abbreviation for the face amount of the stamp.

  • Own indicates the stamp status: ✓ for unused; ✗ for used or canceled; ⭑ signifies I ordered one; ; ✨ indicates it was bought recently; ✠ means an auction bid is pending; and ◎ is used, and it costs too much for unused.
