Valona
Valona is the Italian name for Vlorë, a port city on the coast of Albania. The name comes from the Greek name of the city, Avlónas. Italy invaded the city in 1914, during the First World War, and the Italian expedition there is dated from 1917 to 1920 in the page’s timeline. It ended when an Albanian rebellion, the Vlora War, forced the Italians out of Albania in 1920.
Italy invaded Valona again in 1939, and Albania became the Kingdom of Albania under Italian control until 1943. The city is only about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Italy across the sea, which made it an obvious place for Italy to hold. At the entrance to the bay lies Sazan Island, where Germany and Italy established a submarine base and other naval installations. As a result, the Allies bombed them heavily.
Italian occupation of Valona continued until Italy surrendered to the Allies in 1943. Nazi Germany then occupied the city until 1944. Communist forces under Enver Hoxha liberated it that year.
Note
This is another new album page. Unfortunately, I don’t have any of these stamps overprinted with city name, Valona. They’re the same stamps used in Italy, but without the overprint. Since I have those, I know their dimensions to be able to design this album page in Adobe Photoshop.
Contains 11 spots: own 0 – 0 unused, 0 used.
