Giro d’Italia
On May 13, 1909, the first Giro d’Italia started in Milan with 127 riders. La Gazzetta dello Sport, a sports newspaper, created the race to sell more copies, and Luigi Ganna won that first edition over eight stages. The race has run almost every year since. It was suspended from 1915 to 1918 because of World War I and again during World War II, resuming in 1919 and 1946 respectively.
Today the Giro is one of the three Grand Tours of cycling, along with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. It usually takes place in May and lasts about three weeks, with around 21 stages through the Alps and Dolomites (e.g., the Stelvio, the Gavia and the Pordoi). The leader wears the maglia rosa (pink jersey) – pink because the Gazzetta was printed on pink paper. Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx each won the race five times, which is still the record.
Note
I like bikes and riding my bike, but I don’t care to watch bike races. I saw one of these races that passed through Lugano, Switzerland. I like checking out some of the bikes. Otherwise, it was boring.
