These stamps were first printed during time when Gabriele D’Annunzio ruled the Fiume region. They were issued during the Italian occupation with the overprint that says Valore Globale, which means overall value, followed by an amount. It’s meant to stipulate the cost in Italian currency, as opposed to what’s printed on the stamp. However, it’s the same amount. So that logic doesn’t make sense to me.
The image on the stamps on the first row are of Capitoline, the name of the she-wolf that supposedly raised Romulus and Remus, the founders of the city of Rome – according to legend. The stamps on the second and third rows depict a ship from Venice in rough seas. This zone was very much under the influence of Venice for centuries. The fourth row stamps show the flag of Fiume in front of the city, proclaining it free – I guess – but the overprint basically declares it not so free.
Note
These stamps are identical to the ones on the previous page, except that the font is slightly thinner on that page compared to this page – or maybe these are meant to be thinner. I can’t tell the differencce. But two stamp dealers confirmed that these stamps go on this page and one dealer confirmed that the stamps on the previous page belong there.
The one stamp that I’m missing, the one on the third row, second position (Sassone 112) is yet another font deviation. I can’t tell them apart. Maybe one day I’ll find one at a dealer and buy it. When I get it on this page, maybe then I’ll see a difference.
