Thanksgiving

U.N. Geneva, Page UNG-2000.1 (BL-2)

In late November 1997, the United Nations, at the General Assembly met and voted on this resolution:

Resolution 52/16

The General Assembly, Recalling Economic and Social Council resolution 1997/46 of 22 July 1997, Proclaims the year 2000 as the International Year of Thanksgiving.

That’s all of the text of the resolution.

The agreement doesn’t elaborate on what’s to be done as a result of the resolution, just to proclaim that in two years the international community will be thankful. They don’t even say for what they will be grateful – not even a que for people to take time to think about for what they are thankful.

In mid January 1998, they adopted this resolution, which would not take effect until January 2000. In that month, they issued the first stamp on this album page to celebrate the year of thanksgiving.

At the core, the U.N. is very much a bureaucratic organization run by civil servants. This resolution is a demonstration of that.

Note

There seems to be a red theme for stamps this year – at least for most of these. Reds and oranges are used often in art for excitement and anger. I guess they’re excited about the fifty-fifth anniversary and angry about the suffering of refugees.

Contains 10 spots: own 10 – 10 unused, 0 used.
